Elle est très âgée, a survécu à trois guerres mondiales, à la naissance du sponsorship et à l’apparition des sports populaires modernes, mais elle est encore pleine de charme… L’America’s Cup est née bien longtemps avant que le football, le golf ou le rugby soient inventés.
Beaucoup, sur la côte Est américaine surtout, s’émeuvent de voir la « vieille dame » se passionner pour le commerce et les sunlights. Ils auraient préféré qu’elle demeure un passe-temps de vacances pour de riches banquiers new-yorkais face à d’élégants Anglais habitués à perdre…
Ce sont pourtant eux qui ont inventé sa nouvelle vie en la rendant complètement professionnelle par l’intermédiaire de Dennis Conner, le premier marin à avoir compris qu’il fallait naviguer plus de 250 jours par an pour espérer gagner. Évolution inévitable, combats d’arrière-garde, argumentation inutile…
OUI, l’America’s Cup est devenue un évènement majeur du sport moderne, OUI, l’argent l’a complètement transformée. Elle a toutefois gardé l’essentiel de son sex-appeal : connaissez-vous dans le sport moderne un trophée qui soit aussi « exclusif », aussi légendaire, et qui soit tant médiatisé ?

Quite often, above all on the East Coast of the US, spectators have been moved to see the old Lady, impassioned by the business and the spotlight. It used to be that she spent her vacation time with the rich New York bankers sailing against of the English accustomed to losing…
Nevertheless it is they, the East Coast elites, who invented the new lifestyle and created a completely professional sport via the intermediary Dennis Conner: the first sailor to have understood that you must sail more than 250 days a year if you have any hopes of winning. Inevitable evolution, fighting the tide, inutile to argue the opposite….
