source : La Stampa in english

Bertarelli: “The America’s Cup has become a game for engineers. I won’t be there.”
Interview with Alinghi’s boss (full version): “So far only four teams have signed up; that should tell you something.” “The boats for the next Cup? Catamarans disguised as monohulls. They should have kept and developed the AC50 – they would have had six teams immediately, us included.”
Ernesto Bertarelli, Mr. Alinghi, is relaxed and cheerful. He just won the GC32 Worlds at Riva del Garda in the owner-driver division, sailing as always with Alinghi’s colors. When the discussion turns to sailing, it’s immediately clear that he just loves it. A true passion.

Bertarelli, do you still believe that foiling catamarans are the future of sailing?
“Yes, I’m sure of it. Helming a boat like the GC32 sailing at 35 knots is incredible, tense, like driving a Ferrari. And these are only first generation boats. I’m part of a group of owners, on Lake Geneva, who are building a 35’ catamaran with T-foils and a computer run flight controller – it’s going to be fantastic. We’re only at the beginning, there is a huge margin for development.”

Some sailors miss the classic designs, monohulls with spinnakers.
“It’s as if you give someone a Ducati 650, and then say why don’t you buy a Harley? I have a Harley Davidson, all chrome and romance, every now and then I take my wife out for a ride in the country with it. But if I want to race I’d use the Ducati.”

So you can’t go back.
“Just ask any young sailor what boat he wants. Even 12 year olds want to try foiling on Moths and Nacra 15s.”

What do you think of the proposed design for the next America’s Cup?
“They’re catamarans disguised as monohulls. They’ll be slower than what we could have achieved if we’d continued to develop the boats we used in Bermuda, and probably more dangerous and harder to control because there’s only a single rudder. I really don’t get this: why change designs for every edition of the Cup? Plus, I think the ‘mono-marans’ will be more expensive.”

Well, the America’s Cup doesn’t necessarily have to be low-cost.
“Ok, but when you only have four teams (there are only four challengers at the moment for the next Cup: Team New Zealand, Luna Rossa, the US and the UK), you have to ask yourself the hard question. You risk repeating what happened to me on Lake Geneva: I build an incredible catamaran, the Alinghi 41 Le Black, I won everything for two years, and then all of a sudden I was racing alone. Listen, as it is, the America’s Cup is a game for architects and engineers, now the sailors take third place. And there’s a high risk of investing an enormous sum in the wrong boat.”

But in the 2003 Cup won by Alinghi, then defended in 2007 with you onboard as navigator, wasn’t it just the same?
“We won the first time with boat N°64, then with N°100 in 2007. That means that 100 boats were built in that class. So if you do a Cup, you know what direction to take for the next one: maybe you spend the same amount developing the new project, but the possibility of building a slow boat is fairly low. Look at Ben Ainslie in the last Cup: the best sailor in the world, but he had the wrong boat. Game over.”

If they hadn’t changed the design, would you have challenged for the next Cup?
“Yes, I would have. And now Switzerland has enough sailors to challenge even with the nationality rules. Changing design has cost them at least two teams (Alinghi and Sweden’s Artemis, ed). They would have had six right from the start and it would have easy to get to eight. I was hoping to see some sign of doubt, but nothing, they carried on. They also wanted the most important structural elements of the boats to be one-design, the same for all: but how’s that supposed to work? I’d love to meet a judge who’d say that they are all the same. If you loose a half-second in a tack, as soon as you’re ashore the lawyers take it all in hand…. I don’t want to receive a fundamental piece of the boat from the organizer. It’s as if each team in Formula One had the same motor.”

In Bermuda, it seemed that you might even be the Challenger of Record, the challenger’s representative, for the next Cup.
“No, it it was decided long before the match began that it would be Patrizio Bertelli and Luna Rossa. When he promised material support to New Zealand, the agreement had already been made.”

Let’s go back in time. Do you ever think of what the America’s Cup could have become if it hadn’t ended up in the courtroom after the 2007 edition? Would you have continued to participate?
“Unfortunately I made a few mistakes. But of course I would have continued. A week after the conclusion in 2007 we had already confirmed the design for the next Cup and the two year time frame. There were sponsors too, though no longer.”

Things were different then. And they even accused you of having made the Cup too commercial.
“We had at least ten teams that had at least thirty million euro to spend. Valencia was such a success that all the teams had their sponsors in place for another edition. The town of Valencia had put in 250 million euro. As Alinghi, I was completely financed, and I think the Kiwi’s and the English were too. We withdrew and now we’re back to a Cup, that maybe some people like, where you have to have a Daddy Warbucks who pays for it all. That was not my vision.”

But you were a Daddy Warbucks in the America’s Cup.
“Yes, that’s right. But once we won, I tried to build a Cup that would pay for itself. I wanted sailing to become a sport like soccer or Formula One, where you wouldn’t risk having only four teams like a local club race. Look at the GC32 class, thirteen teams add to the fun, they create a wonderful atmosphere and make for great images.”

You miss the America’s Cup, don’t you?
“I love sailing, if it only were a game with a more balanced playing field. Frankly, I’m having a lot of fun now on the GC32, without all the problems inherent in a Cup challenge and without spending a fortune.”

There’s also talk of anti-America’s Cup circuit with the Bermuda AC50s, organized by Russel Coutts.
“I think that it’s only him with Larry Ellison (Mr. Oracle, ed). All the boats are theirs. I tried the same thing in 1999 with the Maxi One Design, eight boats, all mine. My idea was to do the Volvo Ocean Race, but Knut Frostad, the CEO at the time, didn’t want to. I launched a circuit that lasted a year - I paid for everything, but in the end you get tired. No, a system where a single owner supplies the boats, and races too, I think it would be difficult to make it work.”

But why is Coutts doing it – out of spite?
“I don’t know...”

They say that Coutts has Louis Vuitton on-board for his circuit.
“That too, something else that I don’t understand. Couldn’t they have agreed on doing the next Cup together? The brand is linked to the event’s history. I think that a Prada and LV pairing could work well, both are in the luxury sector.”

Will you watch the 2021 America’s Cup anyway, even though you’re not racing?
“Certainly, like always.”

Tell me the truth - the Cup still runs in your veins!
“I love sailing, that’s the truth. I won the Cup and lived in that world for ten years, maybe it’s best years. I think would have stayed ashore for the next Cup, I’d done my time. But now, mostly I’m sorry that the new generation of sailors won’t live that kind America’s Cup. There was a wonderful atmosphere with all those teams; even the smaller teams were part of it all, dreaming of a win over Alinghi. Now Cup sailors are always the same people, it’s a closed circuit.”

Several teams are training on TP52s.
“But what use is training on a traditional monohull when you’ll race on a foiling boat? Why don’t they come race on the GC32s - is the next boat going to foil or not? And again, this circuit is significantly less expensive than the TP52s.”

You have fun on the GC32, don’t you?
“Yes, a lot of fun. Here there are sailors who train 320 days a year; I can only manage a month, racing included.”

Did you dedicate a lot of time to the Cup in 2003 and 2007?
“The first time I managed to keep working, say a third of my time went to the Cup. That edition coincided with a simple private life: I had just married, my first daughter was two, my company was doing quite well. But the second time was a bit more complicated, organizing and defending the trophy at the same time was a huge responsibility.”

But why did you chose to challenge for the Cup?
“I went to Auckland in 2000, where Luna Rossa lost to TNZ, when I realized that the Maxi One Design wasn’t working. I wanted to clear my head and went with my friend Michel Bonefus who had helped me with the Maxis. I was surprised by the welcome: I met Peter Blake; Patrizio Bertelli invited me for a coffee. So, many doors had been opened – they showed me the boats, the NYYC team wanted to sell me their boat after their disastrous campaign. I saw the first races, I had fun, I went home and back to work. And two or three months later Russell Coutts called. I hadn’t met him, we had never shaken hands. He said he wanted to leave (TNZ, ed.), that he wanted to create a team in Europe, that he was in talks with several people. He spoke with Bertelli, as he did later when he left Alinghi for Oracle. Unacceptable contracts, only Ellison could met those conditions...”

It is what it is. Regrets?
“No, I never look back on yesterday, only to tomorrow. But that’s not always the right thing to do, sometimes I should look back, sometimes memories fade. Maybe my memory isn’t that good. But I didn’t want to be just a passenger for the Cup, I wanted to sail too, I wanted to be part of the team, to be involved.”

You speak of the respect of professional sailors in the GC32. Could you explain?
“It means to be considered a sailor by people twenty years younger than you, to succeed in creating a relationship based on respect.”

Well, in any case the owner is respected.
“The respect of a professional sailor in a race isn’t the same thing. If you’re not finishing ahead of sailors like Draper, Minoprio or Cammus, they don’t come over and with a pat on the back give you a ‘Well done, mate’. That’s what counts.”

One last question: do you like ocean racing? It seems that the Volvo Ocean Race is up for sale.
“I was born in Rome and I’m always cold. I can’t imagine sailing anywhere south of Rome. I love the sun!
